West Texas
Chow Chow Rescue
Welcome to the West Texas Chow Rescue website!
Our goal is to rescue friendly and outgoing Chow Chows and give them a second chance at finding loving and caring homes. Our organization has placed numerous Chow Chows with loving families and individuals all across the country and even overseas
Our Program
West Texas Chow Rescue is operated by Mike and Linda Brantley. We have experience in raising, showing, and training a variety of dogs; in particular Chow Chows. Our foster kennel is located on the arid Plains of Lubbock County about 10 minutes west of Lubbock, Texas.
To ensure that our placements are appropriate, we need to make sure that we select a dog that is compatible with your lifestyle. That is why it is essential that we chat with you and determine how best to meet your needs. If we have a Chow that may be the right one for you, we will invite you to our kennel to meet him. If you do not live in our area, we can email or send a variety of photographs to you of the dogs you are interested in. If we do not have a Chow to suit you now, we may have one at a later date. Just keep in contact with us and visit our site regularly.
Although previous ownership of a Chow is not a must, it is helpful to have some knowledge of the breed before thinking of adoption. It is a good idea to visit some of the links listed on this page for more detailed information on the breed.
We expect our dogs to be an intergral part of your home and be involved in your family life and activities. We also want to ensure the safety of the dogs we place, therefore we prefer that adopters have a fenced yard. Occasionally, exceptions are made for responsible dog owners with special situations.
Our adoption fee is $250. This fee is used to offset the cost of medical expenses and feed. All dogs are spayed or neutered and up to date on their vaccinations. They are heartworm negative and have been started on preventative. They are bathed, dipped, groomed and have their nails trimmed. Some are good with cats. All are friendly with good, even dispositions and we feel will adapt readily to a new home. All are 100% guaranteed. If for any reason your adopted dog does not work out, we will take it back and replace it with another rescue dog. If you are not happy with your new pet then chances are the pet is not happy either. We want to ensure that both owner and Chow are happy.

"Once you open your heart to a Chow, your world will never be the same."
Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels.
I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.
I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid.
As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage.
I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today.
Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them.
As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past.
I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life.
She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me.
I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her.
Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship.
A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.
Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.
I would promise to keep her safe
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.
I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor.
So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors.
So many more to be saved.
At least I could save one.
I rescued a human today.

Harley
Meet Harley.....he is a 5 month old red chow mix puppy. His mother is a beautiful dark red chow and his father is unknown. He has a lot of chow characteristics but with a smooth coat, which makes grooming a lot easier! Harley is very good with people of all ages, can be worked with to accept cats and plays with the other dogs. He has a tendency to be a bit alpha but is learning quickly not to be pushy! Harley needs a home that can give him lots of TLC, training and exercise. He is an adorable puppy looking for a family to call his own!
Ling Ling
Is this an adorable face or what? Ling Ling is just two years old and sweet as he can be! Very much a puppy in his temperament and not a mean bone in his body! He was very good for his nail trim and grooming but I think he had never had a bath before! All in all, he was very good and will have a beautiful coat. Ling Ling has never met a stranger but he would do best in a home as the only pet as he is a bit too pushy with the other dogs.
Ayla
Ayla is a pretty little black girl that is just a doll! Sweet as she can be, Ayla had a pretty rough life prior to come here, yet she loves people just the same! She is great with other dogs and could be worked with to accept cats. She is not a big girl but her heart sure is!!!! Her right ear has been injured and is shorter than the other but it is an old injury and does not bother her at all! Ayla is only 2 years old and is looking for a home to call her own!
Manny
This is Manny, our resident clown! He is always watching everything around him and his antics always make us smile! He is a young boy, not real tall and all CHOW! Manny would be best as an only dog as he is pretty alpha with other dogs. However, he ignores the cats!!!! He loves to go for walks and is a quick learner!
Ramona
Ramona is a sweet young lady that came to us with a litter of NINE puppies! She was a wonderful mother and is excellent in the house! She is clean, quiet, well behaved and a joy to have around. Ramona is great with other dogs and ignores the cats. Please remember she just had a litter of puppies so has NO hair right now, but that will grow back. And right now for the summer months, that short coat is a lot better! If you are looking for a wonderful house dog and companion....Here she is!!!
Romeo (fostered in Pheonix, AZ) cream male
Stray Dog Recovery Program has many available dogs pulled from the streets, injured, starving, wounded, infected from scrapping and fighting to stay alive.
Meet Romeo, his video before recovered from the streets can be viewed from a link above. Starving, half his ear gone, writhing with infection, Romeo is just one of the many injured dying abandoned dogs the Stray Dog Recovery Program has pulled from the streets and rehabed. He is altered, vaccinated, licensed, microchipped and housebroken, good with other dogs, loves all people, he is a lover. He is small approximately 30 lbs, he smiles even when he is asleep, he is such a happy happy boy.
Romeo would be a great companion for anyone, senior citizens, children, couples, singles, men, women, he doesnt care, he is a lover not a fighter and he needs his own home where he can be king vs in my rescue program vying for time and attention due to having so many others in the same position as him, dying on the streets. I take all my dogs back no matter what, for any reason at any time. Romeo is not a barker, he does like to dig in the dirt when it is warm out, that is easily fixed by just bringing him inside and allwing access to cool air and a fan. He loves to go for rides or just cuddle on the couch. He has no bad habits or issues but he would need some work to get along with cats, but he is reasonable and intelligent and he would eventually accept them just because he loves you enough to do that for you and not for any other reason.
Home check is required and all adults in family must agree to adoption. Adoption agreement contract required. If you are the right home for Romeo the rehoming fee is negotiable. Contact Jamie at filahound@aol.com
Peter--Adopted!
Meet Peter!!! He is the last of Ramona's puppies....and the biggest! We were not positive what the father was, but watching this puppy grow, we are fairly certain he was Great Pyrenees. He was born the middle of April so about 10 weeks in these pictures....and as you can see....he is a BIG puppy! Happy, sweet, loves all the dogs, cats and every person he has ever met. Peter is too young to neuter yet, but he will be required to. He has had two sets of vaccinations and worming. Won't you open your heart and home to this adorable puppy???
Bella--Adopted!
Bella is a beautiful black female about 18 months of age. She is a loving, outgoing, happy girl that is great with everyone! Bella loves to go for walks and is great on a leash and even knows a few basic commands such as sit. If you are looking for a companion for you and your current dog....Bella is your girl!
